Response was the re-enactment of a Lacanian metaphor -the early morning in Baltimore (as seen by Jacques Lacan through a hotel window in Baltimore's inner harbor) as the unconscious mind. In this work, the metaphor was expanded to encompass the interior of the hotel room, which in Response represented the conscious mind and the body, the "fading spectator" of subjectivity responding to the "in-mixing otherness" of the unconscious mind: the signs, the traffic lights in the early morning. In Lacan's metaphor, street signs are like the "inner-other" of the unconscious, invisibly running the show and structured like a language. "It's like a devil plays a game with your state of awareness" (of the unconscious.) Towards the end of his talk at John Hopkins, Lacan suddenly espouses Jouissance. Translating this word into English is not exactly possible. He points to the inadequate "Enjoy" Coca Cola. A surplus enjoyment, a forbidden joy, an orgasm. Whatever it is, subjectivity begins to fade as we dissapear into everything beyond ourselves.

Response was the re-enactment of a Lacanian metaphor -the early morning in Baltimore (as seen by Jacques Lacan through a hotel window in Baltimore's inner harbor) as the unconscious mind. In this work, the metaphor was expanded to encompass the interior of the hotel room, which in Response represented the conscious mind and the body, the "fading spectator" of subjectivity responding to the "in-mixing otherness" of the unconscious mind: the signs, the traffic lights in the early morning. In Lacan's metaphor, street signs are like the "inner-other" of the unconscious, invisibly running the show and structured like a language. "It's like a devil plays a game with your state of awareness" (of the unconscious.) Towards the end of his talk at John Hopkins, Lacan suddenly espouses Jouissance. Translating this word into English is not exactly possible. He points to the inadequate "Enjoy" Coca Cola. A surplus enjoyment, a forbidden joy, an orgasm. Whatever it is, subjectivity begins to fade as we dissapear into everything beyond ourselves.
